Rutgers University Professor Gary Rendsburg will lecture on his new book: "How the Bible is Written"
Friday Night Dinner and Lecture
Sponsored by the CAI Scholarly Adult Jewish Learning Committee
This three-part lecture series is based on the speaker’s most recent book, How the Bible is Written (Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 2019). The goal of the book is to bring interested readers – scholars and laypeople alike – closer to the original text of the Hebrew Bible, in order to provide them with a greater appreciation of its literary artistry and linguistic virtuosity. As such, the book and this lecture series focus not so much on what the Bible says (though that too) as how the Bible says it (per the title). Specific topics treated include wordplay, alliteration, repetition with variation, dialect representation, intentionally confused language, marking closure, and more.
“Reading Creation: Genesis 1”
There is no better place to start than at the beginning. Through a close reading of Genesis, ch. 1, the manner of biblical Hebrew prose narrative will be revealed. One teaser: finally, we will have an answer as to why the words ‘sun’ and ‘moon’ do not occur in the description of their creation on Day Four.
Lectures are free and open to everyone. Registration for the Friday night dinner is required. Please register below.
