Shabbaton with Guest Speaker Professor Gary Rendsburg

Saturday, January 25, 2020 28 Tevet 5780

1:00 PM - 2:00 PMChapel

Rutgers University Professor Gary Rendsburg will lecture on his new book: "How the Bible is Written"

Shabbat Lunch 'n' Learn

Sponsored by the CAI Scholarly Adult Jewish Learning Committee

This three-part lecture series is based on the speaker’s most recent book, How the Bible is Written (Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 2019). The goal of the book is to bring interested readers – scholars and laypeople alike – closer to the original text of the Hebrew Bible, in order to provide them with a greater appreciation of its literary artistry and linguistic virtuosity. As such, the book and this lecture series focus not so much on what the Bible says (though that too) as how the Bible says it (per the title). Specific topics treated include wordplay, alliteration, repetition with variation, dialect representation, intentionally confused language, marking closure, and more.

“Genesis 29: The Story of Jacob and Rachel”

Our demonstration of “How the Bible Is Written” continues with a verse-by-verse reading of Genesis, ch. 29, one of the Torah’s best-known narratives. Join us as Jacob meets Rachel at the well, he comes to live with Laban, he first marries Leah (by deception – how did that happen?), and then finally marries Rachel.

Lectures are free and open to everyone.
