The Michael and Barbara Erlichman Film Series: "Sefarad: Crypto-Jews in Portugal"

7:45 PM - 10:00 PMAdult Lounge

This drama tells the history of the Jews in Portugal across 500 years, largely through a recounting of what is called the "Portuguese Dreyfus Affair." Arthur Carlos de Barros Basto (1887-1961), a real-life Portuguese army captain, discovered his Jewish ancestry, converted, and established a Jewish community in Porto, including the 1938 construction of the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue. He furthered the return of crypto-Jews, and, during World War II, helped Jews escape the Holocaust. But Basto faced accusations of conduct unworthy of an officer, and the army expelled him. His granddaughter, now vice president of Mekor Haim, spearheaded a drive to rehabilitate him, and her grandfather was reinstated posthumously in 2013.

Thanks to a generous donation from Michael and Barbara Erlichman, we have the oppourtunity to celebrate our rich Jewish heritage through film. Screenings of dramas, comedies, and documentaries will be followed by discussions.
