Professor James Flynn is an Associate Professor of Theology/Philosophy from Caldwell University

Studying interfaith awareness, religious diversity, and religious pluralism is usually built upon an ethical foundation in the concept of religious tolerance. Tolerance, religious and otherwise, is an evolving ideal, and there are substantial philosophical controversies surrounding it. It is the goal of these lectures to study and evaluate the philosophical controversies about tolerance and to relate these to current day controversies.

In these presentations, we closely examine some of the classic philosophical and literary texts behind the concept of tolerance is Western thought. The history of Western thought has an abundance of texts on this, and we focus on some of the critical ones.
