Our founding documents guarantee a natural right to life, liberty, and "the pursuit" of happiness. I always wondered why happiness, unlike life and liberty, was not guaranteed; now I wonder whether it can be pursued. In this class, we will examine excerpts of Shakespeare’s "Macbeth", Kohelet, and Huxley’s "Brave New World", demonstrating that neither power, wealth, nor unthinking contentment is the recipe for true happiness. In contrast, Aristotle, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, and Arthur Brooks teach a path to lasting happiness. We will examine these lessons, and through discussion and (voluntary and private) journaling, examine our own emotional condition, and set a path towards attaining happiness.

A light dairy lunch will be provided at 11:30 am.
This class is free for CAI members and nonmembers.
