Join the Tzedek Initiative for their inaugural book club meeting to discuss James, a recently published novel that retells the story of Huckleberry Finn through the eyes of the runaway slave, Jim. The book, which won the 2024 National Book Award for fiction, explores identity, race, and relationships through this retelling. For more information, contact Sue Goldberg or Ruth Jaffe. Special note: Since this book was chosen, the author has joined a group of other authors in signing a letter declaring Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide and pledging to boycott all Israeli literary institutions in protest. We have made a decision to move ahead in reading and discussing this book. However, this has triggered a broader discussion about consuming pieces of art or literature from those who have said or done terrible things. We hope to explore this issue more fully in the future.
