INTERFAITH LECTURE SERIES

Wednesday, July 26, 2017 3 Av 5777

7:45 PM - 8:45 PM

The Interfaith Committee will be sponsoring a new lecture series beginning July 26 at CAI. The second and third lectures will be held at Peace Islands and Notre Dame in October and November. The dates have not yet been finalized for those at this time. All three lectures will cover "Why is Religion So Violent and What Can We Do About it?" given by Rabbi Gerald L. Zelizer, Rabbi Emeritus, Congregation Neve Shalom, Metuchen.

The sacred literature of monotheistic religions, including Judaism, are double edged with sources of hostility and exclusivity parallel to sources of compassion and universalism.  In our own time the violent component can result in killing and war. The class will study some of those sources in the three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Islam and Christianity), explore the reasons why they are there, and look at other sources and voices attempting to reform the violence.  Rabbi Zelizer will suggest what we can do about violence and religion through lecture, study material, DVR programming, and class discussion.
